Nando’s is one of the most popular food chains in the world, so it is no surprise that thousands of users have asked us if it is halal.

About Nando’s

Nando’s is a South African multinational fast casual chain that specializes in Portuguese flame-grilled peri-peri style chicken.

It was founded in Johannesburg by Robert Brozin and Fernando Duarte in 1987.

It has over 1200 branches worldwide.

Halal Information

Nando’s has over 1200 locations worldwide.

In Muslim countries such as Pakistan & Saudi Arabia, Nandos offers a 100% halal menu. 

None of the US locations serve halal chicken, as confirmed by their official website. According to Nando’s website, their halal-only chicken restaurants “are signposted both in the restaurant and online”

Nando’s in Canada serves halal chicken in all of its Ontario restaurants. However, this is not the case in British Columbia and Alberta.

In the UK, some of the restaurants serve halal chicken and these have been mentioned on Nando’s UK’s official website. They source their halal chickens from Shazan Foods Ltd and Freemans of Newent Ltd.


In Australia & New Zealand, Nando’s sources halal certified chicken from its suppliers but this is not applicable to all locations. They have specifically mentioned this on their official website, saying “Our chicken suppliers all carry Halal certification and our bastings are Halal. Some of our individual franchised restaurants may choose to obtain individual restaurant Halal certifications and we encourage you to check with your local restaurant directly.”

Halal Verdict

So, what’s the halal verdict?

Nando’s is not halal in all of its US locations. Every restaurant that serves halal chicken has it signposted on either their restaurant or online. So, it’s best to confirm the availability of halal chicken from each restaurant. 

In the UK, only select locations (mentioned on their website) serve halal chicken.  

In Australia & New Zealand, only a few of their restaurants have halal chicken options, so it’s best to check with each local restaurant directly, just to be sure.

Nando’s is 100% halal in Muslim countries such as Pakistan & Saudi Arabia. 

Obviously there are many non-meat items on the menu which halal observers can consume, such as their 

  • Desserts – such as their Carrot Cake, Brownie and Mango Gelado
  • Sides – such as their Spicy Caesar Side Salad, PERi Mac, Charred Sweet Potatoes, and
  • Snacks – such as their Halloumi Sticks & Chili Jam, Garlic Sticks & Hummus with PERi-PERi Drizzle

Halal Caveat

You should always verify the halal status with the restaurant directly just to be sure!

Restaurants change their meat suppliers and their policies constantly. 

Furthermore, individual franchise locations change ownership all the time. So one location’s owner can use halal meat but can sell it to a new owner who chooses not to. So, to make sure that you have the latest information — reach out to the establishment!
